District nine

New trailer out for the Peter Jackson produced District Nine.

Frankly, despite worries that it might be a little cheesy, this looks terrific. First-time director Neil Blomkamp looks to be making an impressive debut.

In a press release issued by Sony, Co-Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Amy Pascal said,

"We have seen some of Neil's enormously creative work launching Halo 3 and he is a true talent who understands how to use visual effects in full service of the story. With Peter Jackson and his team at WETA workshop working with Neil, we believe District 9 can be a true event tentpole on our release slate."

The story concerns a race of alien beings who come to Earth and are captured by the Government and forced into living in fenced-off slums while the human communities treat them with fear and hate. Further details are unclear at present but it looks as though this film could tread some very interestingly satirical ground dealing with issues of race and xenophobia.

If Blomkamp’s excellent short film, ‘Alive in Joburg’ which provides the basis for this is anything to go by this is going to be well worth losing out on Halo for.
