News of a remake to John Carpenter's 1982 classic, The Thing is hardly going to surprise anybody in these days of outright remake-mania. After all, it was a remake itself of 1951's The Thing From Another World.

Bloody Disgusting have managed to snag themselves a little sit down with screenwriter, Eric Heisserer (who also wrote the script for the new Nightmare on Elm Street picture). He seems to suggest that while the new film is stil only in the writing process it looks as though it will be more of a prequel than a remake.

It could be telling the story of the Norwegian Base who fell foul of the shapeshifting alien lifeform in Carpenter's film.

While we applaud the notion that this is not a remake, we can't say that this sounds too appealing so far - prequels often suffer from the fact that an audience will automatically know what the situation will be by the end of the film having seen it already. This usually massively undermines the dramatic tension and usually makes for an exercise in simply filling in the blanks - see the recent Wolverine film for proof of this.

Still, it's very early days yet and we're not ruling anything out at this stage. Let's hope it's good...
